Year 8 Activities Week

In the first week of Term 2, all Year 8 students undertook an activities week instead of a traditional camp experience. Students were introduced to the themes of the week at our Year Level Assembly and they included the following:
  • Taking risks
  • Being challenged
  • Form new relationships, and
  • Getting out of our comfort zone
The students then listened to Josh Jones who leads the non-for-profit organisation, The Just Be Nice Project. The work he undertakes is with mentally ill, homeless and vulnerable people in society. He discussed the importance of relationships with friends and family, and for all students to reach out if they are struggling. He focuses on the importance of emotional literacy and knowing who to discuss your difficult times with and to really love one another, as at different times we will need to call upon our friends for help.

The students then took the next three days to complete a series of challenging physical and mental activities to develop that growth mindset and to get out of their comfort zone. These activities included:
  • A coding course making a video game with Young Engineers
  • Some physical challenges with SEDA sports
  • Building and engineering forming Planks
  • A virtual reality experience at Eureka Skydeck
  • Listening to a homeless experience at The Big Issue
  • A walking tour of the Immigration Museum, the Shrine of Remembrance, the Queen Victoria Market and Birrarung Marr, and
  • High ropes, wake boarding and aqua park fun at Melbourne Cable Park
Many thanks to Year 8 Coordinator, Paul Roberts, for leading such a wonderful experience for our students, and all the Year 8 mentors and staff for assisting the students in this fun-filled, rewarding and challenging week.
